What freedoms are required for artistic work? How can they be defined and shaped? What responsibilities come along with independent professions and how do these two concepts – freedom and responsibility – relate to each other? What visibility do we want for our productions and at what moments does a logic of profit maximization conflict with artistic quality?
The »independent« in »independent performing arts« often also implies freelance or independent professions (freie Berufe). In turn, this type of profession profits from an entrepreneurial spirit. Artists involved in a project also want the project's producers to take on a certain amount of entrepreneurial responsibility – if only to ensure that they get their fees. Right?
A conversation on the fraught relationship between enterprise and the freedom of art, on definitions of terms and possible ideal conditions. To kick off the event, Philippe Bischof, director of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, presents his thoughts on production and value chains in the independent performing arts, both current and future and Wolf Lotter, co-founder of the brand eins business magazine contributes his perspective on this question through a video message. This is followed by a discussion about today's situation and theoretical ideal conditions, featuring Katja Grawinkel-Claassen, dramaturgy & audience development FFT Düsseldorf, Solmaz Shahbazi, architect, artist and producer, and Wilma Renford, Impulse Theater Festival dramaturg, with Stefan Mesch, arts and culture journalist, as moderator.
The event will be held in German and will be translated simultaneously into English. There is no need to register for the event.
